How much sick leave do you earn?
Six hours for each bid period of active employment, up to a bank of 1,300 hours. § 13-A-1
New hires get their first year’s sick leave up front: by the end of initial training they have everything they would have earned in their first 12 bid periods, and then accrue nothing more until the 13th. § 13-A-1-b After a single continuous sick absence that used more than 170 hours (or more than 40 for an occupational injury or illness), you earn seven hours a bid period until you have earned back what that absence used. § 13-A-1-a-(1) § 13-A-1-a-(2)
What does calling in sick cost?
A lineholder is paid, and debited, the pay value of the trip or part of the trip missed. § 13-A-3-a-(3) A reserve is paid and debited 4:18 for each reserve day missed. § 13-A-3-b-(2)
A sick day that was already part of your awarded schedule costs three hours for both lineholders and reserves. § 13-A-3-a-(1) § 13-A-3-b-(1) A long call reserve who calls in after 0600 for more than one day is not charged for the first day. § 13-A-3-b-(3)
What if you run out of sick leave?
You are paid the part of the trip your bank covers, in proportion to its scheduled value. § 13-A-3-d The Extended Sick Bank can pay after that, but only once you have gone through a 15-hour unpaid period and Corporate Medical has approved your medical justification. § 13-B-2-a
What is the Extended Sick Bank (ESB)?
A second bank for longer illnesses. You earn four hours of ESB in each bid period you don’t use it, up to 180 hours, with a career limit of 540 hours. § 13-B-1-a Every pilot was credited 120 hours of ESB on September 29, 2023, and new hires get 120 hours at the start of initial training. § 13-B-1-b-(1) § 13-B-1-b
To be paid from the ESB you must first use up your regular sick bank, then go through a 15-hour unpaid period, and get approval from Corporate Medical with medical documentation. § 13-B-2-a § 13-B-2-c-(1) Months with a full 180-hour ESB also earn LTD Access Credits, which shorten the 60-day long-term disability waiting period. § 13-B-3
Can you use sick leave for a family member?
Yes, up to 30 hours a year, for a family member as defined in the contract or by state law, whichever is better for you. A doctor’s note may be required. § 13-A-5-a
Will you need a doctor’s note?
The company may ask for one before paying sick leave, and sick leave is only for actual sickness. Doctor and dentist appointments don’t qualify unless the provider keeps no office hours outside your scheduled work time or on your days off. § 13-A-5
Can you earn back sick leave you used?
A lineholder can, by picking up a trip: during the absence (from its second day, with company agreement), or from open time on days off in the same or the next bid period, picked up after telling the company about the sick leave. § 13-A-2-b § 13-A-2-c A reserve in the first year of service can, in the same bid period, trade an approved reserve day off for each work day missed. § 13-A-2-a
Unused sick leave and ESB are not paid out when you leave the company. § 13-C
“six (6) hours of sick leave shall be deposited into a Pilot’s sick leave bank up to a maximum of 1300 hours”
“A Pilot must exhaust their Section 13-A sick bank (hereafter “traditional sick bank”), followed by a fifteen (15) hour unpaid period, and provide sufficient medical justification to Corporate Medical and receives approval, prior to being paid from their ESB.”
