Sick leave used per reserve day, United pilots
Short answer
Usually 4:18 for each reserve day missed, including days you had a trip or training on. A sick day included in your monthly bid award costs three hours.
What the contract says
“For each reserve day missed (to include reserve days the Reserve had previously been assigned a Trip or training) due to sickness, a Reserve shall be paid and their sick leave bank shall be debited four hours and eighteen minutes (4:18).”
“If a Long Call Reserve is sick and notifies the Company after 0600 on a reserve day and the sick leave is for more than one (1) day, he shall not be charged sick leave for the first day.”
Is the first day ever free?
Yes. A long call reserve who calls in sick after 0600 on a reserve day, for more than one day, is not charged sick leave for that first day. § 13-A-3-b-(3)
What if I already flew that day?
Then nothing is debited for that day. If you get sick partway through a trip, the trip is rebuilt with the next legal deadhead home, and any days the rebuilt trip no longer covers go back to reserve days, debited at 4:18 each while you stay sick. § 13-A-3-b-(6)
Can I come off sick leave early?
Yes. If you call in available for the next day by 1200, the sick leave for that day and later days is removed; after 1200, the company tells you whether the next day is removed. Any day sick leave is removed is not charged. § 13-A-3-b-(4)-(b) § 13-A-3-b-(4)-(c) § 13-A-3-b-(4)-(d)
