Sick leave accrual for United pilots
Short answer
Six hours for each bid period of active employment, up to a maximum of 1,300 hours in the bank.
What the contract says
“for each Bid Period of Active Employment, six (6) hours of sick leave shall be deposited into a Pilot’s sick leave bank up to a maximum of 1300 hours”
Is it different for new hires?
Yes. By the end of initial training a new hire has all the sick leave they would have earned in their first 12 bid periods, and then earns nothing more until the 13th bid period. § 13-A-1-b
Do I earn faster after a long illness?
Yes. After a single continuous absence that used more than 170 hours of sick leave, you earn seven hours a bid period until you have earned back the amount used. For an occupational injury or illness the threshold is 40 hours. § 13-A-1-a-(1) § 13-A-1-a-(2)
Where can I see my balance?
Your sick leave, ESB and LTD Access Credit balances are reported on one payroll statement each bid period. § 13-D
