How long discipline stays on file, United pilots
Short answer
Letters of counsel and discipline are removed after 18 months of active service from the date issued, if no further discipline was imposed in that time.
What the contract says
“the Company shall remove and/or delete any record of any Letters of Counsel or disciplinary action taken against a Pilot from the Pilot's personnel file after eighteen (18) months of Active Service from the date of issuance if no further discipline has been imposed during that period”
Is the record gone completely?
Not entirely. Labor Relations may keep a separate record, used only if you or ALPA later claim you have never been disciplined. Hearing officers and Flight Operations investigators are not told about it. § 17-C-11-b
Will I see what goes into my file?
Yes. You get a copy of anything placed in your personnel file that may be used to evaluate you, and nothing unfavorable can go in without a copy to you and a chance to discuss it. You can add your own statement. § 17-C-12
