When do you get boarding pay?

For each flight segment you actually board. § 3.D.1 You still get it if you board a flight and all passengers deplane, and if you board and the flight then cancels. § 3.D.1.a § 3.D.1.b

When don’t you?

If you board a flight while on standby, you don’t get boarding pay unless you actually work the flight segments. § 3.D.1.c Boarding pay also doesn’t apply to boarding described in Section 18.E. § 3.D.2

How is it calculated?

It is based on the scheduled boarding times in Sections 11, 14 and 18, and paid for all minutes of the established boarding time for the flight segment. § 3.D.2 It is paid as pay, no credit, and equals one half your hourly rate of pay from the Section 3.A pay scale. § 3.D.3

How is it different from holding time?

Holding time is a separate payment. If you are required to remain on duty with passengers on the aircraft, that time is “holding time” and does not count as flight time for flight time limitations. § 3.E.1 At originating and intermediate stations it starts to accrue when ground time exceeds the scheduled ground time by 30 minutes. § 3.E.2 At crew change stations it applies when you are required to remain with passengers waiting for replacements beyond 45 minutes. § 3.E.3 The amounts are in the contract text.

Where do the board times come from?

Domestic on-board times are in Section 11.M: 30 or 35 minutes before departure depending on the aircraft. § 11.M.1 § 11.M.2 § 11.M.3 The company can raise these times (up to 35, 40 or 45 minutes depending on the aircraft) only with 60 days’ notice to APFA and flight attendants. § 11.M.1.a § 11.M.2.a § 11.M.3.a On an international premium destination segment the requirement is 50 minutes before departure, which the company can reduce to 45 with the same notice. § 14.F.1 § 14.F.1.a On an NIPD segment it is 45 minutes, reducible to 40 with 60 days’ notice, and domestic segments in international flying follow Section 11.M. § 14.F.2 § 14.F.2.a § 14.F.3 Section 18 covers charters. § 3.D.2

Are these rules in effect yet?

Boarding pay (3.D) is one of the provisions L1 delays: its target date is six months after signing, and until then the prior agreement’s provision stays in effect. [[L1.AttA@2]] § L1.E This page does not check whether it has actually gone live, so ask your APFA representative.
